Does music matter?

The other day I ran across this article. It's from the UK's Observer/Guardian and it's a conversation about music moderated by Jarvis Cocker of Pulp and a few other very cool musicos. In some cases, I think they come across a bit like old people who are beyond the poit of being impressed with new music, but for the most part I think it's a valid way of looking at the music world today. Especially their take on music in advertising.

Excessive Force

OK so I have yet to post anything from one of my favortie genres: industrial. I think it's mainly cuz most of the best songs from that era are old. And this track is old, but it's one that lots of folks don't know, even people that were into industrial. And since I recently saw Nitzer Ebb, I'm in the mood.

Excessive Force was a side project (oh how those industrial folks loved side projects) for Sascha from KMFDM. Basically took the harder side of KMFDM and sped it up a bit. Hard fast and intensely German. So yes it basically sounds like KMFDM. But this one is a bit more over that hard edge. No girly back up singers, no groovy bass line. Not that those things are bad things, but sometimes Sascha just wanted to get tough. Finger On The Trigger" is tough... I give it a 9.

120 Days

Sorry for the tardiness. I promise to get back on track soon.

So here's 120 days, a new band on Vice. They are Norwegian, I believe, and definitely don't sound like any one else on Vice. To me there's a dash of The Church, Jesus and Marychain, The Cure, Spacemen 3, and maybe even some early U2. I haven't given it enough time yet, but so far I am digging it. I need to give it a rainy cold morning listen. Seems to fit this Norwegian sound. At this point I'll give it a 7, but that will probably go up in time.

Dot Allison

So I am planning my next monthly party (the All England Club), and I am thinking that the theme will probably be a nite of all UK ladies' music. Any music from any genre, as long as the bands/acts are British and have at least one female member. Surprisingly, I thought I would have less wax than I actually do, so this should be fun.

But it got me thinking about Dot Allison. Former singer for Scottish rave/chillout group One Dove, she later took some Burt Bachrach and a dash of Andrew Weatherall, and created a romantic smoky dreamy record called Afterglow. Honestly, its one of thse records few people own, but those who own it love it. She has done more records, but they never grabbed me as much as the debut. She recently put some stuff online on Itunes UK exclusively, but it's demo stuff, so I dont want to judge it too harshly. A few tracks are duets with Pete Doherty of all people.

Go out and get Afterglow, it gets a 9. These two tracks get 9s as well.
